What you Need to Know About Capacity, Consent and the Law
This four-part on-demand webinar, facilitated by Jane Meadus, a staff lawyer and the Institutional Advocate at the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly (ACE), reviews what you need to know about consent, capacity and health care decision making in Ontario.
This is an on-demand webinar, originally recorded in 2023 and 2024. Approximately 4 hours to complete.

- When you need to look to the substitute decision maker(s).
- What to do if there is a disagreement between substitute decision makers.
- When the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee becomes involved.
Topic 3: Consent and Capacity Board
This lesson will discuss:
- The Role of the Consent and Capacity Board.
- What the Board does and doesn't do.
Topic 4: Complex Decision Making
This lesson will discuss:
- When a person can sign a Power of Attorney for Personal Care.
- Who evaluates capacity.
- When the Public Guardian and Trustee is contacted.
- Step-families and the substitute decision maker hierarchy.
- Addressing mental health and fluctuating capacity.
